The first stage of protection is the meter-base protector which is a device installed at the meter or main disconnect to effectively protect major appliances such as air conditioning compressors, washers, dryers, and refrigerators from damaging surges.
The meter-base protector is owned and maintained by Progress Energy. There is a monthly maintenance fee of $5.95, plus tax, after a one-time installation fee of $44.95. Installation includes a free outdoor electrical grounding inspection and any necessary repairs. For you convenience, the monthly fee and one-time installation is added to your electric bill.
