How EnergyWise Home works
At no cost to you, Progress Energy installs a small device, usually in the garage, that is connected to selected electric equipment such as your water heater and your central heating and cooling system. If you have a pool pump, you can also have it connected for maximum savings.
This device makes it possible for Progress Energy to temporarily reduce the energy consumption if our community experiences an unusually high power demand. If that happens, Progress Energy can send a signal to selected appliances of any of the more than 400,000 EnergyWise Home participants to cycle power off and on to reduce the overall energy demand.
The cycles are limited in duration and to certain times of day according to a schedule designed with your comfort in mind. Most participants say they forget they are part of the program until they see the savings on their bill because they've never noticed a cycle. Participation is totally voluntary and there is no penalty should you ever wish to leave the regular year-round or winter-only program.
EnergyWise Home is only available to Progress Energy residential customers. Depending on the program selected, participants must have centrally ducted electric heating and cooling, or heating and water heating using equipment that is compatible with EnergyWise program technology. Credits are prorated according to usage and will be issued monthly when total electric usage exceeds 600 kWh.
