Quick Energy Tips
These quick energy tips can help you reduce electric usage in your home.

During the summer months, set your thermostat at the highest comfortable setting. Progress Energy recommends a setting of 78-80. You can save 7 to 10 percent on your cooling costs for each degree above 78.

Use ceiling or portable fans to supplement your air-conditioning in occupied rooms.

During the winter months, set your thermostat at the lowest comfortable setting. Progress Energy recommends a setting of 68-70. You can save 7 to 10 percent on your heating costs for each degree below 70.

To increase your heating and cooling system efficiency, replace or clean system filters monthly and do not block registers and return vents with furniture or drapes.

If your furnace or air conditioner is over 10 years old, consider replacing it with an energy-efficient heat pump.

Make sure your home is properly insulated. Progress Energy recommends R-19 to R-30 insulation for ceilings, R-11 for floors (suspended frame only), R-11 for frame walls and R-5 for concrete block.

Reduce hot water used for washing clothes.

Install low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators to reduce hot water use.

Switch to fluorescent bulbs for areas of constant use, such as the kitchen.

Turn off all small electrical equipment, such as radios, VCRs or TVs when not in use.
