Customers of Progress Energy Carolinas may elect to “Net Meter” the generated electricity by their renewable source. Net Metering allows eligible customers (solar photovoltaic, wind-powered, biomass-fueled, or micro-hyrdo) to connect to the grid with their existing single metered interconnection, and bill monthly for the “net” energy consumed. The meter spins forward when electricity is consumed, and spins backward when power is flowing back to the grid. The output is used to offset your purchases from Progress Energy.

To establish a Net Meter arrangement with Progress Energy Carolinas, you will be required to enter an Interconnection Agreement, and establish retail service under Progress Energy’s Residential Service Time-of-Use Demand (R-TOUD) or Small General Service Time-of-Use (SGS-TOU) schedules. The Interconnection Agreement specifies the terms and conditions under which your system will be connected to the Progress Energy grid. To learn more about Net Metering, see the Frequently Asked Question page.

A step-by-step outline for establishing a “Net Meter” renewable resource agreement is provided below:

Step 1.  Prepare for Interconnection:  Review Progress Energy’s interconnection standards.

Renewable systems, such as solar, wind, or methane-fueled generation, come in a variety of sizes based on "nameplate capacity". Capacity is measured in kilowatts and designated as kW. The first step in establishing a Net Metering arrangement with Progress Energy is to safely connect the generator to the electric grid. This is necessary for all systems, including such technologies as residential solar. For residential applications and other generation rated 100 kW or less, Progress Energy offers a uniform standard for interconnection that should be reviewed in the initial phase of project development:

Net Metering Meter-Base Configurations

The existing residential meter base does not have to be modified under the Net Metering tariff; however, Progress Energy will have to exchange the existing meter with a more advanced meter. An approved disconnect switch will also be required for your system.

Electrical Inspection

An electrical inspection is not required for Progress Energy to exchange the meter at an existing location. However, owners are required to adhere to all codes and requirements established by the appropriate code authority. An electrical inspection is required for all new residences/businesses before Progress Energy can place a meter.

Step 2.  Apply for Interconnection: Gather technical information on your renewable system and complete an application to interconnect with Progress Energy.

Progress Energy requires specific information from the customer including site information, renewable generator specifications, and other technical data in order to process an application for interconnection. Customers must complete the Application to Interconnect located below. Send the completed application, a one-line drawing of the system, and $100 ($250 for non-residential) application fee to:

Progress Energy
Distribution-Interconnected Generation office
100 E. Davie St., TPP17
Raleigh, NC 27601

Once your application fee is received, a Progress Energy representative will contact you to discuss your application and assist in developing an Interconnection Agreement that is specific to your project.

NOTE: A one-line drawing is an electrical drawing of the system that identifies all major equipment associated with the generation system including the meter base. A one-line drawing can typically be provided by your installer.

Step 3  Establish Net Metering Service: Review Net Metering Rider and Progress Energy will install Time-of-Use Meter.

NOTE: Net Metering customers are currently not eligible to participate as a generation resource in the  NC GreenPower program (as established by the rules and procedures of NC GreenPower) or the  Palmetto Clean Energy (PaCE) program (as established by the rules and procedures of Palmetto Clean Energy).
