Who Can Apply?

Any Progress Energy customer that:

  • Owns their own home and it is their primary residence
  • Has an operable electric water heater currently in service

Am I a good candidate for Solar Water Heating?

An authorized installer can set up a site assessment and confirm that your home meets the minimum criteria for a solar water heating system (installers typically charge a fee for this assessment). This assessment is required to participate in the program. The installer will check your home for solar thermal system viability by reviewing questions such as:

  • Is the orientation of the home's roof appropriate for a solar water heating system?
  • Are there trees or plants that would impact a solar water heating system?
  • How long until the roof may need to be replaced?
  • What is your typical pattern of hot water use? (How many occupants, number of laundry cycles, dishwasher loads, etc.)

How Do I Apply?

  1. Obtain positive site assessment from an authorized installer.
  2. Complete a Progress Energy Solar Water Heating Research Study application form
  3. Mail in your completed application to the address on the form.

Progress Energy will review all applications as they arrive at our Raleigh facility in order that they are post marked, 150 customers who meet the criteria will be selected to participate in the study.

What do I do if I'm accepted into the study?

Acceptance into the study does not guarantee receipt of the $1,000 incentive. The incentive is contingent on completion of the steps below:

  1. Upon notfication by email of acceptance into the study, promptly notify an authorized installer to secure the required permit from local authorities to install the solar water heating system.
  2. Forward a copy of the permit to Progress Energy via mail, e-mail or fax within 60 days of acceptance notification:

    Progress Energy - DSM/EE Programs
    Attn: SWHPP - Building Permit
    100 E. Davie Street (TPP 8)
    Raleigh, NC 27601

    E-mail SWHPP@pgnmail.com or Fax to 877-607-0746.

  3. Selected participants will receive monitoring equipment.  These participants will be notified and an appointment made for installation of monitoring equipment prior to solar panel installation.  Participants not selected for monitoring can proceed with installation of the solar water heating system using the authorized installer.

  4. Submit Satisfaction Survey and inspection certificate following installation, inspection and approval by the local authority.

  5. Upon receipt of final inspection certificate and Satisfaction Survey, Progress Energy will mail incentive check to Progress Energy customer within 8 to 10 weeks.

What happens after I receive my incentive?

  1. Enjoy the benefits of Solar Water Heating.
  2. If selected for monitoring, data associated with solar water heating will be remotely gathered and analyzed for future use.  This is estimated to last approximately 18 months. After that time, the monitoring system will be removed or remotely disabled at not cost to you.
  3. Complete end of pilot Customer Service Survey.
