Operation of customer-owned electric power generation sources can take many forms, all of which involve special attention to safety for customers and Progress Energy employees. See below for more information on safety, the application to interconnect process, and other information.

  • Standby Generators

Customer-owned generation sources electrically isolated/separated from the Progress Energy system (e.g., portable residential generators, standby systems with “break-before-make” transfer switches, etc.):

    • Customers do not have to contact Progress Energy about non-paralleling generation, but should take care to operate their generator safely to protect both themselves and Progress Energy employees. See generator safety tips.

  • Standby Generators with Momentary (less than 60 seconds) Paralleling

Customer-owned generation sources that momentarily parallel (electrically connect) with the Progress Energy system when transferring load from the utility to the generator or vice-versa:

    • For customer-owned generation sources that momentarily parallel (electrically connect with the Progress Energy system for a maximum of 100 milliseconds per transfer operation (e.g., generation system with specially equipped transfer switches): Customers do not have to contact Progress Energy about generation that momentarily parallels for a maximum parallel time of 100 milliseconds, but should take care to operate their generator safely to protect both themselves and Progress Energy employees. See generator safety tips.

    • For customer-owned generation sources that momentarily parallel (electrically connect) with the Progress Energy system for greater than 100 milliseconds and less than 60 seconds:

Prior to the planning and construction of such a paralleling system, a customer should send their contact information and basic information about the system to the Distribution-Interconnected Generation office at customer.generation.pec@pgnmail.com or via US Mail at:

      Progress Energy
      Distribution-Interconnected Generation office
      100 E. Davie St., TPP17
      Raleigh, NC 27601

Someone from Progress Energy will be in contact with you to discuss your generation interconnection.

For the safety of Progress Energy personnel, Progress Energy may require certain protective systems to be in place at the generation site. The Distribution-Interconnected Generation office will provide assistance with the requirements that may apply.
