NC GreenPower is a North Carolina statewide, nonprofit program designed to improve the quality of the environment, by encouraging the development of renewable energy resources through green power purchases and the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions through carbon offset purchases, with consumers' voluntary funding. Contributions to NC GreenPower, a 501(c)(3) charity, may be tax-deductible. Available for North Carolina customers only.

With this program, customers may select the green power option and pay a small additional fee for one or more blocks of 100 kWh of electricity generated from renewable resources, such as solar, wind, small hydroelectric or biomass, to be added to the electric grid. As of October 2008, customers can also support carbon offsets to address growing concerns about the impact of greenhouse gases on the environment.

The voluntary green power and/or carbon offset contribution is added to the customer's regular monthly electric bill. Contributions collected are sent to NC GreenPower, formed by Advanced Energy in 2003, to support generation of energy from renewable sources and the grid, as well as support carbon offset projects.

Renewable Energy product:

A typical contribution of just $4 per month adds one block of 100 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green energy to North Carolina's power supply.  This block of new renewable energy has a resource mix of solar, wind, and methane from biomass delivering power to the North Carolina electric grid.  New renewable energy generators are those installed on and after January 1, 2001.

Large-volume users - usually from the corporate sector - may contribute towards 100 or more blocks per month (10,000 kWh) at a rate of $2.50 per block with a different energy mix.  The large volume product includes a resource mix of solar, wind, small hydro, and all types of biomass, with certain limitations.  Both existing and new renewable energy generation is included in this product.

Carbon Offset product:

A $4 monthly contribution will mitigate 500 pounds of carbon dioxide or carbon dioxide equivalent (greenhouse gas emissions).  Priority will be given to the participating utility service territories in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia for acquiring carbon offsets.

Brokered Bid product:

The Brokered Bid option provides customers interested in annual purchases of $15,000 or more for renewable energy or carbon offsets with a more price-competitive North Carolina option.  If resources are available, these customers can contract to support a specific project, rather than the aggregated mix, allowing them to purchase at a lower rate.  Please contact NC GreenPower for a quote.
