NC GreenPower is a North Carolina statewide program designed to improve the quality of the environment by encouraging the development of renewable energy resources through consumers' voluntary purchase of green power. Available for North Carolina customers only.
With this program, customers may select the green power option and pay a small additional fee for one or more blocks of 100 kWh of electricity generated from renewable resources, such as solar, wind, small hydroelectric or biomass to be added to the electric grid.
The voluntary green power contribution is added to the customer's regular monthly electric bill. Contributions collected are sent to NC GreenPower, a nonprofit subsidiary of the NC Advanced Energy Corporation (AEC) to support generation of energy from renewable sources. Funds are being used to add green power to the statewide electric grid.

Two riders are available as of July 28, 2003.
NC GreenPower is a mass-market product ($4 per block of 100 kWh) available for purchase by any NC electrical energy consumer. The minimum is one block, with no maximum limit or contract period. This block of new renewable energy has a resource mix of solar, wind and methane from biomass delivering power to the NC electric grid. New renewable energy generators are those installed on and after Jan. 1, 2001.
NC GreenPower for Business is a large volume product that offers a lower cost alternative for large volume consumers who purchase at least 100 blocks (10,000 kWh) at $2.50 per block per month. There is a minimum 12-month commitment required by the customer. The large volume product includes a resource mix of solar, wind, small hydro, and all types of biomass, with certain limitations. Both existing and new renewable energy generation are included in this product.
