FAQ

Who is eligible to participate?

Middle and high schools whose electric service is provided by Progress Energy Carolinas are eligible to participate in the competition.

What does my school have to do to apply?

The application packet is available by clicking here. The packet includes information about what is involved in the application process, a timeline, and guidelines about how to select a proposed site for the solar panels at your school.

How does the program work?

The initial application deadline for 2009 has passed. Finalist schools will be selected from among the applicants and will be asked to complete an energy-focused project. Projects will be judged in regional competitions and five schools – one in South Carolina and four in North Carolina – will win a two-kilowatt, demonstration-size, solar photovoltaic system installed on their campus.

What is the timeline?

Applications due - October 2, 2009

Finalists announced - no later than October 16, 2009

Energy Challenge due from finalist schools - December 4, 2009

Winning schools announced - no later than December 16, 2009

What is the prize?

Five schools will be rewarded with a two-kilowatt, demonstration-size, solar photovoltaic system installed on their campus. The system will come equipped with an internet tracking device so that students can study how their solar panels are performing in a variety of weather conditions – and can compare their own school’s solar panel production patterns with the other winning schools in the program. Classroom materials and teaching guides will be provided by Progress Energy.

Solar arrays at each school will closely resemble the array in this photograph.
