John Masiello wins Association of Energy Engineers’ 2009 award

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (November 5, 2009) – For his outstanding work in the area of renewable energy, John Masiello, Progress Energy Florida’s director of Demand Side Management, has been internationally recognized as the Association of Energy Engineers’ (AEE) 2009 Renewable Energy Innovator of the Year.

Masiello leads the Demand Side Management (DSM) team at Progress Energy, which includes energy efficiency. Progress Energy is an industry leader in the development and adoption of programs enabling customers to maximize their energy efficiency and adopt cost-effective renewable energy technologies. The company, which has the most renewable energy under contract of any investor-owned utility in Florida, offers valuable rebates to help customers take advantage of select renewable-energy technologies. For more information on Progress Energy’s rebate programs, visit www.SaveTheWatts.com.

“John Masiello continually demonstrates an unparalleled commitment to helping our customers and our company make the most of emerging renewable energy technologies,” said Progress Energy Florida President and CEO Vincent Dolan. “His keen understanding of renewable energy and his drive to deliver the maximum benefit to our customers are among the many reasons why I believe John is fully deserving of this honor.”

During two decades with Progress Energy, Masiello has elevated the company’s DSM and renewable energy programs to national prominence, extending the influence of the regional utility through partnerships with national energy companies pursuing broad-based energy solutions. In his role, he has worked to align industry, education and government to test pioneering technologies such as hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles and solar photovoltaics (PV) battery storage to explore solutions to issues inhibiting wider usage of solar PV. He is also overseeing Progress Energy’s expansion into the market for solar water heating by packaging incentives and the company’s existing load management program, as well as by tapping the growing carbon offset market to fund solar water heating and energy-efficiency improvements for low-income customers.

Masiello’s experience in the energy industry spans almost 30 years. Before joining Progress Energy, he managed a successful energy-services company recognized by former President Carter as a model program for all states to follow. Masiello served on the National Governor’s Association for Best Practices, Policy Academy on Advanced Energy Strategies for Building, and has led a number of Progress Energy’s award-winning efforts, helping the company earn the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star Trade Ally of the Year Award (2000), Energy Star for Home’s Outstanding Achievement Award (2004), the Corporate Energy Manager of the Year – Region 2 Award (2006) and the Sustainable Florida Award (2003 and 2006).

Masiello received the AEE’s international award, naming him Renewable Energy Innovator of the Year, during a November 4 ceremony held in conjunction with the 2009 World Energy Engineering Congress in Washington, D.C. With the award, he also received AEE’s exclusive Legends in Energy distinction.

The Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) is a nonprofit professional society with more than 11,000 members in 78 countries. The AEE’s mission is to promote the scientific and educational interests of those engaged in the energy industry and to foster action for sustainable development.
