Community Colleges / Skilled Trades

Community Colleges are an integral part of supplying our workforce with Power Plant Operators, Maintenance Technicians, Line Technicians, and Welders.  Our Power Careers Program targets students who are interested in gaining knowledge and hands-on experience to help run our power plants.

If you think a future in the utility industry is a right fit for you, there are several options to consider:

  • Finish high school
  • Take shop, mechanics, math, science or basic electronic classes if available
  • Earn a two-year technical or community college with a craft/technical concentration
  • Earn certification from a specialty program - ex. Main Maritime, Southeastern Lineman Training Center, Nash Community College Lineman Program
  • Gain experience through the armed forces (PAYS program - U.S. Army)

Visit Get Into Energy, sponsored by the Center for Energy Workforce Development (CEWD) to view informative videos about various utility jobs and complete a career assessment to determine which career may be right for you.
