Environmental management
A commitment to excellence is an integral component of our company’s culture, and this commitment extends to environmental performance. In fact, the cornerstone of Progress Energy’s environmental vision is a focus on continual improvement in environmental performance and stewardship.

We have a formal environmental management system (EMS) to oversee the environmental impacts of our business. Our EMS generally follows the ISO 14001 standard and establishes a process to identify and address environmental risks and to ensure appropriate senior management oversight on a routine basis. Individual business units assume the daily responsibility for assuring environmental compliance. Their actions are supported by several corporate organizations, including a technical environmental section, governance and risk-management staff and an energy policy and strategy group.

The actions of these organizations are guided by our Environment, Health and Safety Performance Council (EHSPC), which is composed of senior executives. The EHSPC provides overall strategic direction, guides corporate environmental policy, monitors environmental regulatory compliance and approves targets that measure, track and drive continual improvement. The company’s environmental activities are reported regularly to the Progress Energy board of directors’ Operations and Nuclear Oversight Committee, which assesses the company’s strategy, performance and activities, and makes recommendations to the full board regarding these matters.
