The Levy County site, approximately 5,200 acres, is located about seven miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico. The site is eight miles north of the Crystal River Energy Complex in Citrus County, where Progress Energy operates a nuclear plant, as well as four coal-fueled units. The Levy County location was chosen based on an assessment of the major siting criteria:  land, access to sufficient quantities of water (from the gulf) and access to the electric transmission system, as well as an overall evaluation of environmental considerations.

Progress Energy has selected the Westinghouse AP1000 pressurized water reactor for the proposed Levy County site. The AP1000 is a state-of-the-art reactor with many passive safety features built in. The 1105-MW units are ideal for the future generation needs in Florida. Read more about the AP1000 design.
