Why Nuclear is a Viable Option

Why file a need case now if you haven’t yet made a decision to build?

The review process for each of the regulatory bodies will be lengthy, and it is important to file as soon as possible in order to keep the option for nuclear generation open.

We have an obligation to provide reliable power to our customers, and our customers will continue to rely on us to meet that obligation.

Is nuclear power economical?

Yes. The increased operational efficiency of Progress Energy's nuclear plants has helped the company keep rates stable over the last decade. Using nuclear power is a way to provide reliable power, maintain long-term customer cost stability, and to reduce our carbon footprint.

How much electricity would a new plant produce?

Each of the two new nuclear units under consideration for Florida would have a capacity of around 1,100 megawatts. As a reference, the current Crystal River Nuclear Plant unit has an 838-megawatt capacity.

What's the status of nuclear plans in the Carolinas?

Customer growth and electricity demand are increasing in our Carolinas service area as well. In February 2008, the company filed a combined operating license (COL) application with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for two possible new reactors at the existing Harris Nuclear Plant site near New Hill, N.C. The company has not announced a decision to build but rather has taken the steps necessary to keep the option open for the future.
