Electricity powers many of the things in our world. Some things like flashlights and remote controls use electricity that is stored in batteries as chemical energy. Other things like televisions and lamps use electricity that comes from an electrical plug in a wall socket.

Encyclopedia Britannica defines electricity as the phenomenon associated with stationary or moving electric charges (electrons). There are two kinds of electricity: static electricity and current electricity. Static electricity stays in one place and doesn't move like current electricity. Lightning is an example of static electricity. This is a huge spark that flows between positive charges in the top of a thunder cloud and negative charges in the bottom. Current electricity is the flow of electric charge through a substance that conducts electricity such as copper wire. The electricity from the wall socket comes to your house through electrical wires called power lines. So, at one end of the power line you have a plug in a wall while at the other end Progress Energy's generation plants are generating your electricity.

This section will explain how Progress Energy generates the electricity that reaches your homes.
